Orbital Mechanics

Gods of Planeko delivers precision astronomy through computational orbital mechanics calculated in real time on your iPad. The app determines exact planetary positions using your GPS coordinates and current time, processing ephemeris data for every major solar system body from Mercury through Neptune, plus the Moon and Sun. This is not approximate visualization. These are the actual positions as they exist in space at the moment you open the app.

The planet tracker displays altitude and azimuth angles in real time, telling you exactly where to point your telescope or binoculars. Each planet profile includes rise, transit, and set times for your location, current magnitude for brightness assessment, and distance from Earth measured in astronomical units. A live solar system diagram renders the orbital geometry at a glance, showing you the current configuration of all planetary orbits around the Sun.

The sky simulator extends this accuracy across time. Step forward to next month's observation session or backward to verify what you saw last week. The simulator animates planetary motion at speeds up to 60x real time, letting you watch Mars loop through retrograde motion or observe how Jupiter and Saturn drift through the zodiac over months. This is powered by the same orbital calculation engine, simply applied to different time coordinates.

Celestial Tools

Planet Tracker

Track Mercury through Neptune with real-time altitude, azimuth, rise and set times for your exact GPS location. View detailed orbital data including perihelion, aphelion, eccentricity, and inclination. A live solar system diagram shows current planetary geometry. The tracker uses high-accuracy orbital mechanics with no approximations or guesswork.

Meteor Shower Calendar

Complete annual calendar of major meteor showers including Perseids, Leonids, Geminids, Quadrantids, Lyrids, and more. Each entry displays peak dates, expected Zenithal Hourly Rate, radiant constellation, and optimal viewing hours. Plan your observation sessions weeks in advance and never miss a shower again.

Sky Simulator

Time-travel through the celestial sphere. Set any date and time, past or future, and the simulator calculates planetary positions for that moment. Animate the sky at speeds from 1x to 60x real time, watching planets drift through constellations and observing conjunction events. Perfect for pre-planning observation sessions or understanding planetary cycles.

Telescope Helper

Enter your telescope aperture in millimeters, focal length, and eyepiece focal length. The app instantly calculates magnification, true field of view in degrees, and theoretical limiting magnitude based on aperture. Save multiple telescope and eyepiece configurations for quick reference during field sessions.

Observation Log

Maintain a private, on-device journal of every observation session. Record the objects you observed, sky conditions, seeing quality, transparency, temperature, and personal notes. Each entry is timestamped and stored locally on your iPad. No cloud sync, no account required, complete privacy.

Dual Themes

Switch between Cosmos theme with deep navy and black backgrounds designed to preserve night vision in the field, and Desert Dawn theme featuring warm golden-orange and deep blue palette optimized for daytime planning. Both themes maintain high contrast for outdoor readability.

Astronomy Systems

Position Calculation

  • GPS location determines observer coordinates to within meters, enabling precise horizon coordinate calculations for altitude and azimuth angles
  • Right ascension and declination computed in J2000.0 equatorial coordinate system, converted to apparent positions accounting for precession
  • Rise, transit, and set times calculated using iterative horizon-crossing algorithms adjusted for atmospheric refraction at horizon
  • Visual magnitude computed from heliocentric and geocentric distances, phase angle, and body-specific albedo parameters

Data Presentation

  • Constellation list filterable by month of optimal visibility, showing traditional names, IAU abbreviations, and peak observation periods
  • Star map displays stars down to magnitude 5.5 with touch interaction to query individual star designations, coordinates, and photometric data
  • Physical data cards present planetary diameter, mass ratios, orbital period, distance from Sun, and surface temperature where applicable
  • Greek mythology text accompanies each constellation with classical source descriptions of mythological narratives and cultural significance
